Donald Trump has made almost four thousand false claims since he became President, an average of between five and six per day, and the stream of untruths reached a peak in the lead up to the midterms elections, according to fact-checker Daniel Dale.
The President will often ‘roadtest’ lies during rallies and then build on them, says Dale, who has compiled a list of Trump’s false claims at the Toronto Star newspaper. So if Trump is a serial liar, why call this a list of ‘false claims’, not lies? The short answer, Dale says, is that we can’t be sure that each and every one was intentional. In some cases, he may have been confused or ignorant. What we know, objectively, is that he was not telling the truth.
