Australian cartoonist Mark Knight slammed as ‘racist’

Australian cartoonist Mark Knight is facing a global backlash over claims a cartoon he drew of Serena Williams is racist.

The Herald Sun cartoon shows the tennis champion stomping on her racquet while a dummy lies on the court.

Williams lost the final 6-2 6-4 to Naomi Osaka after receiving three code violations, including a game penalty for verbal abuse, from chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Social media reaction to the cartoon was swift with many saying Knight had used stereotypical imagery when drawing Williams.

Harry Potter author said the drawing reduced Williams to “racist and sexist tropes”.

Knight said he was ‘amazed’ by claims the cartoons was racist.

“It’s been picked up by social media in the US and my phone has just melted down,” he told the Herald Sun.

“The world has just gone crazy.”

Knight’s colleagues at News Corp were quick to show their support.
