Scott ‘Razor’ Robertson would be a good choice as next Wallabies coach, says former Australian hooker Jeremy Paul.
Paul told Radio Sport on Monday he would hire Robertson ahead of anyone, even England rugby coach Eddie Jones.
Paul, who lived in the Waikato until he was 13 years-old, said if he was looking at successors for current coach Michael Cheika, he wouldn’t look past the coach who led the Crusaders to their title in 2017.
“If I was Australian Rugby, I’d be chasing that guy,” Paul said.
“I’d be hounding that guy. I know we want to be able to produce our own coaches but I believe Scott Robertson is the best coach in Super Rugby…he’s an incredible coach.”
Cheika is contracted to Australian Rugby until after the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and set to leave the position if Australia don’t win it.
Jones is reportedly a candidate, but Paul felt Robertson was the man for the job.
Robertson’s first season as a Super Rugby coach ended with the title. His side are sitting at the top of New Zealand ladder this season also.
The Wallabies have won just two of their past 15 encounters against the All Blacks.
“Australians just hate seeing our teams lose,” Paul said.
“It’s not just picking the right coach…there’s massive issues – there’s not just one thing we can put our finger on because there’s a multitude of things that have gone wrong over a long, sustained period of time.”
Paul played 72 tests for the Wallabies.
