Russell Crowe and the Irwin family have named a koala chlamydia ward for British comedian John Oliver to thank the talk show host for his contribution to the cause.
The Last Week Tonight host yesterday joked that having the ward named in his honour fulfilled his “only goal” for the show and that he was “f***ing done” before walking off the stage.
Last month Oliver revealed he was the mystery telephone bidder at an auction held by Russell Crowe, where he purchased items including a jockstrap from Cinderella Man for $7,000.
“I think this is such a wonderful random act of kindness that I am planning now on how to best use the @iamjohnoliver money he spent on groin protectors and such,” Crowe said on Twitter.
“Given his often shown genuine love for Australians and Australia , it’s got to be something special.”
Crowe donated money raised from the auction to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.
Oliver joked that thanks to the honour, he had now achieved everything he had set out to do on his show and was calling it quits.
“It was a simple goal. It was just three words long. That goal: a koala chlamydia ward,” Oliver told viewers.
“What I’m essentially saying is that we have accomplished everything we set out to do on this show which means — thanks very much everyone but we are f***ing done here.”
In a video posted to Twitter by Crowe, the Irwin family thanked him for his donation and said it would help save thousands of koalas.
And Oliver got a special mention too.
“And a big thank you to John Oliver for buying some of Russell’s incredible things in his auction,” Bob Irwin said.
“You are helping for the fight for chlamydia and a plaque has been organised in your honour.”
