Darren Lehmann has resigned as Australia cricket coach in the wake of the ball tampering scandal.
Lehmann made the shock announcement on Thursday after watching his players, Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith, make grovelling apologies on their return to Australia.
He will stand down from the position after the fourth Test against South Africa, starting Friday in Johannesburg.
Lehmann spoke through tears, saying the game ‘needed to move on’ after Bancroft, Smith and David Warner were involved in a plot to cheat in the third Test.
He said he leaves the post heartbroken after watching Smith break down in tears at Sydney Airport.
‘The feeling is that Australian cricket needs to move forward and this is the right thing to do,’ Lehmann said.
