A second man who was trapped in a trench that collapsed at a Victorian building site has died.
Jack Brownlee, 20, died at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Thursday morning, the day after he was rescued from the collapsed trench at
, west of Melbourne.
Another man also trapped in the incident died at the scene on Wednesday morning.
The two men were working in a hole at a building site in the city of Ballarat when tragedy struck at around 11am.
A witness told 3AW Radio rescue crews had been working to free Mr Brownlee, who was trapped in the trench.
‘There’s a new housing estate being built, they’re putting in new pipes and he’s been trapped,’ he said.
‘There’s a lot of emergency services, some were in the hole with him, they have an excavator there trying to dig in the hole.’
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said Mr Brownlee was trapped for a ‘significant period of time’.
‘An Air Ambulance Helicopter will fly the man to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He has lower body injuries and is in a serious condition,’ they said.
WorkSafe attended the scene and will investigate the incident.
