On Friday, Nova 96.9 breakfast host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald’s ‘faithfulness test’ prank on his wife backfired when she agreed to go on a date with another man.
Now, armchair critics have weighed in on the shocking footage that ended with the radio star sprinting across the road yelling: ‘This is bulls**t, she’s giving him her number!’
Among the harsh social media reactions was a man who insisted Fitzy had ‘picked a dud’ with his wife-of-ten-years Belinda Irons.
The comments were in reaction to the former Big Brother star’s ill-fated ‘honey trap’ prank, where he arranged for a hunky ‘firefighter’ to flirt with his wife and ask her out.
Fitzy had sent the shirtless Men On Fire Australia dancer to chat up Belinda at a Sydney cafe, only to be left stunned when she agreed to go on a date with the man.
One Facebook user wrote: ‘lol just shows how arrogant this tool is to think his wife would not accept such a proposal.’
Several commentators were unable to see the humour in what was a simple comedy sketch.
One concerned fan even told the Nova host to ‘dump her’.
Others parked themselves firmly in Belinda’s corner, joking that Fitzy may have perhaps let his ‘rig’ go too long without a tune-up.
‘Yeah maybe you should hit gym fitzy look at your body look at the other guys!?’ someone wrote.
Another criticised him for choosing the day of his tenth wedding anniversary to pull such a stunt.
‘This is sad for her… leave her alone and celebrate your anniversary with love and flowers not pranks,’ a fan said.
Others wondered if the moment was staged, and noted that Belinda may have been being polite, or was simply agreeing to catch up as friends.
‘He never asked her out on a date he said drink!’ one wrote, ‘aren’t women aloud to have guy friends?’
‘Maybe she’s onto you and knows that your pranking her.’
The man who participated in the prank has since been identified as ‘Fireman Sam,’ an exotic dancer who works for a hire company called Men On Fire.
On their Instagram, the company proudly claims to have ‘satisfied over 1,000 Ladies (& Gents).’
‘Fireman Sam’ is frequently pictured in various racy shirtless images, usually covering the lower-half of his body in a firefighter’s outfit for thematic purposes.
‘Happy Hens Caitlan!’ one post was captioned, featuring Sam posing with bride-to-be Caitlan.
They appeared to be suffering from contrasting temperature syndrome, with hot Sam kindly stripping off his unofficial fireman’s jacket to keep cold Caitlan warm.
Men On Fire happily appear at events for both women and men, even using the hashtags ‘#gay #gaysydney #gayfitness’ to draw attention to their admirable equality protocols.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Sam confirmed that he was not in fact a fireman, and appeared to imply Belinda was aware she was being pranked.
‘I’m not a real fireman I run a fireman themed hens party company called men on fire,’ he said, ‘and BJ (Belinda) was completely suspicious of the set up and played along.’
After the prank backfired on Friday, Fitzy immediately ran over to interrupt the pair.
‘This is bulls**t, she’s giving him her number!’ he yelled from across the road. ‘BJ, what are you doing, that’s another fail!’
Belinda saw the funny side, however, and teased her husband by remarking how attractive the other man was.
‘Look at him,’ she said laughing. ‘Keep them coming, a hot guy on my doorstep.’
