A man has been charged with a string of offences after allegedly breaking into a Rockhampton home and “viciously assaulting” the female resident in a “random” attack, according to police.
The 56-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries and a broken arm. She was airlifted to Brisbane on Tuesday for further treatment as police questioned her alleged attacker.
The man broke into the victim’s home on Lakes Creek Road in Koongall about 6.40am on Tuesday before “viciously assaulting” the female occupant, according to police.
He then allegedly stole the woman’s Nissan Navara before police arrived and found the victim.
“She has some quite severe injuries, some facial and head injuries – they’re not considered life-threatening at this stage,” Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow told 7 News.
“The unknown offender has broken into the house, viciously assaulted the female and stolen her motor vehicle.”
However, officers arrested the accused attacker in Blackwater on Tuesday morning, about 200 kilometres west of the crime scene, but the woman’s vehicle is yet to be found.
A 23-year-old Koongal man has been charged with a range of offences including stealing, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, entering a dwelling with intent, armed robbery and wilful damage. He was scheduled to appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
