Sydney has sweltered through its second hottest day on record as the mercury reached more than 47 degrees in Penrith.

Heatwave grips NSW
New South Wales and the ACT were in the grip of a heatwave, with some temperatures exceeding the 40 mark.
There was little respite to be found anywhere as temperatures above 40 were found all over the city.
Richmond, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Camden, Holsworthy and Horsley Park were other stations to record more than 45 degrees.
