Australia’s representative at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal will be pop singer Jessica Mauboy, SBS has revealed.
Australia has been competing in the world’s most popular television music competition since 2015 and has secured an impressive three top-10 finishes thanks to previous entries Guy Sebastian, Dami Im and Isaiah Firebrace.
Mauboy has already performed at Eurovision, in Denmark in 2014, but only in a non-competitive capacity.
“I will sing my heart out for Australia, I’m so proud to be officially representing my country and a little bit nervous — mainly about the dress!” Mauboy said on Twitter.
Australian Idol winner Sebastian was Australia’s first entry in the official competition in 2015, where he finished an impressive fifth. Im came within touching distance of glory in 2016 when she finished runner-up, and Firebrace came ninth in last year’s edition.
Portugal will host the event in 2018 after winning in 2017, thanks to Salvador Sobral’s aching love song Amar Pelos.
More than three million Australians watched the Eurovision semi-finals and grand final in 2017.
In 2014, the singer performed her song Sea of Flags in front of the Australian and Aboriginal flags.
It was the first time in Eurovision history that a non-European country had been asked to perform.
But Mauboy was not the first Australian to grace the Eurovision stage.
Olivia Newton John was the first Australian Eurovision competitor, representing the United Kingdom in 1974.
