The bodyguard for Kings Cross nightclub identity John Ibrahim is recovering in hospital after being shot in the back in western Sydney.
Emergency services were called to a house in Merrylands on Friday night where they found Semi ‘Tongan Sam’ Ngata with a gunshot wound to his back.
The Ibrahim family bodyguard, 59, was treated at the Price Street address before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.
His condition had improved to serious but stable on Saturday morning.
NSW Police didn’t name the victim but said he was known to police. News Corp Australia and Fairfax Media both report it was Ngata who was shot.
‘We’ve got detectives canvassing the area and investigations are ongoing,’ a police spokeswoman told AAP.
News Corp Australia reports a car was set alight in nearby Rees St in Mays Hill shortly after the shooting.
‘We are looking at that as a line of inquiry but it’s not been confirmed at this stage if it’s linked,’ the police spokeswoman said.
John Ibrahim’s mother lives on Price Street in Merrylands.
His brothers, Fadi and Michael, and his son, Daniel, are currently before the NSW courts accused of being involved in an international tobacco and drug- smuggling conspiracy.
Ibrahim’s model girlfriend, Sarah Budge, is facing firearms and ammunition charges following a series of organised raids and arrests across Sydney and the United Arab Emirates in August.
