Omar Khalid Khurasani, leader of the banned Jamaatul Ahrar (JuA), a breakaway faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, died on Thursday after being wounded in a US drone strike in Afghanistan, a group’s spokesperson has said.
“Our leader, Omar Khalid Khorasani, was wounded in one of the recent drone strikes in Afghanistan. He was wounded badly, and today he was martyred,” Asad Mansoor, a JuA spokesperson, told Reuters by telephone.
Khurasani hailed from village Qandari of Tehsil Safi in Mohmand Agency. He later made his splinter group JuA after the killing of TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud in 2014.
The JuA has claimed responsibility for some of the deadliest suicide bombings in the country and has in the past also supported Middle East-based Islamic State.
